Selangor Journal: RS-1 success will catalyse Selangor’s 27 pct contribution to national GDP — MB
SHAH ALAM, July 11 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari is confident Selangor can contribute 27 per cent to the national gross domestic product (GDP), based on the state’s better-than-forecast growth from 2021 to 2023.
He said the state’s 7.43 per cent growth from 2021 to 2023 exceeded the five-year target outlined in the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).
Amirudin added that Selangor’s success in logging the highest economic growth in 2023 at 5.4 per cent and recording a trade value of over RM400 billion has put the state on track to achieve the 27 per cent target in 2025.
“Average figures show we are slightly ahead of achieving the 27 per cent aim as we had extraordinary growth in 2022, with average growth at over 11 per cent then.
He also highlighted the rise in Selangor’s economic activity value from RM340 billion in 2021, to RM381 billion in 2022, to RM406 billion in 2023.
“The state government believes this growth will let us achieve the 27 per cent contribution to the national GDP in 2025, at the end of the RS-1,” he said in winding up the RS-1 mid-term review at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
Amirudin said the state’s projected contribution to the national GDP was revised from 30 per cent to 27 per cent based on economic and geopolitical conditions.
“As I mentioned when tabling the RS-1 mid-term review, the revised target was based on geopolitical situations that impact global trade, as global economic growth slows slightly.
“New policies introduced by the federal government such as the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, Madani Economy framework and 12th Malaysia Plan also contributed to the revision of the target.
“This was all summarised in the RS-1 mid-term review. Until 2025, based on our current performance, the likelihood of us reaching a 30 per cent contribution to the national GDP would have been low,” he said.
