Selangor Journal: Nothing’s impossible: MB says Selangor can better 2022’s record GDP contribution
KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Although it will not be an easy feat, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari is confident Selangor can surpass the impressive 25.5 per cent contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP) it recorded in 2022.
This can be realised through the various initiatives undertaken by the state to expand the economy as long as it remains focused.
“In 2022, more than one-quarter of Malaysia’s GDP came from economic activities in Selangor. At 25.5 per cent, it was a record.
“Despite certain quarters suggesting it is nigh-on impossible to repeat that feat, I am confident that if we can build on that success and not take our past success lightly or be complacent, we can do even better,” he said during a Semicon Southeast Asia 2024 luncheon session at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre today.
In June last year, the Statistics Department revealed that Selangor contributed over a quarter to the national economy in 2022 at 25.5 per cent — the first state to achieve this.
Selangor also recorded 11.9 per cent economic growth, outperforming the national growth rate of 8.7 per cent.
In January, Amirudin said the state is anticipating a healthy GDP growth of between five and six per cent this year. If this can be realised, then Selangor would contribute an estimated 26 per cent to the national economy.
In his speech today, the Menteri Besar also cited data from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida), which noted Selangor’s continued impressive growth in 2023.
“According to Mida, 234 projects valued at RM19.31 billion were approved in Selangor (in 2023),” he said.
Amirudin added that at least 89,000 new jobs were created, with the electronics and electrical industry contributing one-third of the total approved investments in the state.
“This represents a 40 per cent increase compared to the previous year in 2022,” he said.
Previously, in February, it was reported that 564 balanced and sustainable development projects will be implemented in Selangor this year under the Fourth Rolling Plan (RP4) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), with a total allocation of RM3.41 billion.
The Selangor State Development Office said that of the total number, 463 are new projects, whereas 101 are extension projects.
