Selangor Journal: MB confident Greater Klang Valley can compete with other regional powerhouses

HULU SELANGOR, May 19 — Greater Klang Valley, which connects Selangor’s four main cities, has all the makings of a high-value development area capable of competing with other metropolises in the region.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the area has the potential to offer tremendous economic opportunities considering the cities involved — Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Klang — already boast comprehensive facilities and infrastructure.

“We strive to make Greater Klang Valley as a metropolitan area. Almost half of the approximately 3.4 million Selangor population lives within this area. However, I believe we need to organise our plans so that it can progress further.

“Today, Greater Klang Valley doesn’t have any competition from other states in the country because we connect four major cities. We need to compare with the likes of Jakarta and Bangkok, among others.

“I believe we will become competitors in this region, in terms of economy, quality of the city, opportunities and uniqueness,” he said after officiating the closing ceremony of the state-level National Youth Day celebration, here, today.

Previously in February, Amirudin had said that the Greater Klang Valley administrative area, which is expected to come into effect this year, will substantially impact the state’s economic activities.

He also said that the area has the potential to be one of the main economic powerhouses in Asia if it is properly done and fully realised.

The establishment of the Greater Klang Valley is crucial to, among other things, streamlining the administrative processes for businesses and residents, rejuvenating mature cities, implementing a digital twin system for government administration, and promoting public transportation.

During the tabling of the 2024 Selangor Budget on November 10 last year, Amirudin had announced a starting allocation of RM2 million to realise the initiative.
