Malay Mail: Selangor makes history with highest-ever contribution to Malaysia’s economy - Caretaker MB

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — Selangor has now recorded its highest-ever contribution to Malaysia’s economic growth, with the latest official data showing that the state contributed 25.5 per cent in 2022 to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP), caretaker Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said today.

Amirudin was referring to the Department of Statistics Malaysia’s (DOSM) newly-released data on Malaysia’s GDP contribution according to each state in 2022, where Selangor was recorded as contributing 25.5 per cent in 2022 as compared to 24.8 per cent in 2021.

“This is the highest growth and highest contribution by Selangor to the country’s GDP since Pakatan Harapan was entrusted with governing this state in 2008,” he said in a statement today.

Based on DOSM’s data published today, Selangor was the state with the biggest contribution to Malaysia’s economic growth in 2022 at 25.5 per cent, followed by Kuala Lumpur (15.9 per cent), Johor (9.4 per cent), Sarawak (9.3 per cent), Penang (7.4 per cent), Sabah (5.4 per cent), Perak (5.3 per cent), Pahang (4.1 per cent), Kedah (3.4 per cent), Negeri Sembilan (3.4 per cent), Melaka (3.0 per cent), Terengganu (2.5 per cent), Kelantan (1.8 per cent), Labuan (0.5 per cent), and Perlis (0.4 per cent).

Apart from being the biggest driver of Malaysia’s economic growth in 2022, Selangor’s own state economy also grew faster than the national economy.

With Malaysia recording 8.7 per cent economic growth in 2022, Selangor itself recorded an economic growth of 11.9 per cent in 2022, which is 3.2 per cent higher than the national growth.

Selangor is one of the four states or territories which recorded a higher economic growth last year when compared to the national growth, with Penang recording 13.1 per cent, Pahang (10.8 per cent) and Kuala Lumpur (9.2 per cent).

Amirudin said Selangor’s manufacturing sector now accounts for one-third (32.2 per cent) of Malaysia’s manufacturing sector, with the state’s manufacturing sector expanding by 9.0 per cent in 2022.

He said Selangor’s construction sector accounts for more than one-third of the industry nationwide at 34.1 per cent as of 2022, and that Selangor’s services sector experienced the highest growth last year at 13.6 per cent when compared to the same sector in other states.

Crediting Selangor’s economic performance to the state executive committee and civil servants in placing the state as the engine for Malaysia’s economic growth, Amirudin said the economic statistics also shows local and international investors’ confidence in the administration of Selangor.

Among other things, Amirudin expressed confidence that Selangor’s era of excellence will only be able to continue when the current administration is entrusted with a new mandate in the upcoming state elections.

Selangor is one of six states headed for state elections this year.

With the Selangor state legislative assembly having been dissolved on June 23, Amirudin — who is also Selangor Pakatan Harapan chairman — is currently leading the caretaker state government for Selangor.
