Selangor Journal: Youth Assembly great platform for exposure to high-level decision-making - MB
SHAH ALAM, May 29 — The Selangor Youth Assembly programme exposes its participants to the decision-making processes at the highest levels of a state, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
Dato’ Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the programme also hones their leadership talents as the future of the state.
“The Selangor Youth Assembly is a good approach as it provides opportunities for youths like from the Youth Council’s leaders, non-governmental organisations, and individuals to experience the (Selangor) State Legislative Assembly.
“Simultaneously, they are also exposed to how the state-level decision-making process works, giving the public a clearer picture of how high-level decision-making is made,” he said.
Amirudin was speaking to the press after presenting the main prizes of the Madani Rakyat 2024 (Central Zone) programme’s lucky draw to the winners at the State Secretariat Building today.
He added that exposing the participants to how policies are discussed and subsequently decided upon is crucial, as it is a form of new knowledge for the public.
“Knowing the process and the environment is important: it is a practice of democracy. We are indeed open to all views, including giving youths the space to voice their opinions,” Amirudin said.
Meanwhile, during a press conference after the Selangor Youth Assembly concluded yesterday, State Speaker Lau Weng San said that one of the motions debated in the programme will be brought forth to the State Legislative Assembly session in July.
It is a motion calling for strict action against foreign citizens who misuse local business licences.
“The entire two-day programme was very intense and satisfying, with all debaters presenting their points succinctly. We will ensure that the input from the Youth Assembly members will be utilised in the upcoming State Legislative Assembly session.
“For now, the motion we have chosen is the third one, which urges the state government to take strict action against foreigners who misuse local business licences. It will be debated upon during the assembly session in July,” he said.
Lau also commended the programme’s participants, whom he said demonstrated quality debates and extensive knowledge of current issues and the policies implemented by the state government.
This year’s programme, which lasted for two days, also received cooperation from the Social Democratisation Association and Selangor Youth Parliament members.
It is offered to students and youths aged between 18 and 35 and favours those involved in non-governmental organisations, local youth movements, and any associations.
First held in 2013, the Selangor Youth Assembly is a special programme under the Selangor State Legislative Assembly aimed at producing critically-minded youths, particularly on state government policies.
