Selangor Journal: ‘State civil servants have duty to safeguard Selangor’s multicultural tapestry’

SHAH ALAM, January 15 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has again stressed the pivotal role of state civil servants in preserving the rich and diverse fabric of Selangor, emblematic of Malaysia.

Being the nation’s most affluent state that embraces all communities, Amirudin said it is incumbent of public office bearers in Selangor to approach their duties with a heightened awareness of the sensitivities of the respective communities.

He emphasised the need to uphold the principles of fairness and humanity in all their actions.

“We must safeguard the multi-religious and multicultural tapestry of this state. In your day-to-day responsibilities, it is crucial to be mindful of the nuances of each community, refraining from actions that solely benefit one group or descendants.

“Today, we are called upon to respect and genuinely understand the diverse communities coexisting with us. We must execute our duties with an unwavering commitment to fairness and humanity,” he said in his New Year’s address to state civil servants at the state’s administrative headquarters, here, today.

Amirudin also cautioned against the rise of extreme identity politics that could potentially ignite racial division within the state and country.

“We must handle this situation well because we are not a state dominated by a single group. We have people of diverse communities, lineages, and backgrounds.

“If practising identity politics becomes the norm, it can inflate the ego of that identity, leading to conflicts or the emergence of unnecessary crises or uncertainties.’

Amirudin added that despite the state’s open-door policy for individuals seeking better opportunities, Selangor remains committed to the rule of law and good governance.

“While we welcome everyone, they must all abide by local, immigration, and federal law. I will support any enforcement action taken with a collaborative spirit,” he said.
