Selangor Journal: PJ, Shah Alam sited for PKNS’ pioneer senior citizen-friendly housing projects

SHAH ALAM, July 25 — The Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) will build more senior-friendly homes in urban areas to ensure the welfare of the elderly.

Its chief executive officer Datuk Mahmud Abbas said the residences, to be built in Petaling Jaya and in Section 13, Shah Alam, will be pilot projects, marking a new goal for the state entity in the six decades since its founding.

“As such, we want innovation after seeing our efforts so far. We observe that the population is ageing, and we want to meet their needs and requirements.

“We want their welfare to be more comfortable, to which we are building special settlements for them.

“In Section 13, the project will be built next to a hospital to facilitate the elderly in accessing healthcare. We want to take care of their welfare,” he said during a press luncheon yesterday.

Mahmud added that PKNS also wishes to generate investments by constructing dormitories for foreign workers, as such facilities will attract investments from both local and international companies, thus providing high economic returns to Selangor.

“Covid-19 taught us many things. Therefore, the state government suggested having dedicated industrial areas. We will build more such facilities, complete with necessary amenities, ensuring comfort.

“This will attract more investments as it meets international standards. It will not only include residences but also recreational areas, kitchens, and laundry spaces to facilitate workers,” he said.

In March, state executive councillor for welfare and women empowerment Anfaal Shaari said that local authorities in the state would collaborate with PKNS and Selgate Corporation to develop care homes for senior citizens.

She said doing so is part of the First Selangor Plan’s objectives, which aim to benefit the elderly and stimulate the state economy.
