Selangor Journal: Flap gates installed in Taman Sri Pelabuhan to reduce flood risk

SHAH ALAM, Oct 11 — The recent installation of flap gates in Taman Sri Pelabuhan, Klang is expected to reduce the risk of flooding in the area, according to Pandamaran assemblyman Tony Leong Tuck Chee.

The Pakatan Harapan lawmaker said three such units were installed by the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) last Sunday at a cost of RM22,000 each.

He explained that the move took into consideration concerns raised by residents there on the frequent incidents of flooding affecting about 30 houses.

“Every time there is a downpour, residents there will be very worried because of the constant occurrences of flood,” he told Selangorkini.

“Prior to the state election (in August), I have discussed with MPK on ways to resolve the problem.

“Subsequently, MPK suggested installing flap gates and they agreed to bear the full cost. I hope this will address the flooding issue.”

A flap gate functions as a check valve, allowing water to flow in only one direction, and is mainly employed to control the flow of water through flood barriers, reservoirs and rivers.

Meanwhile, Leong said the newly-installed flap gates have shown to be functioning well, with no incidents of flooding in the area despite heavy rain in recent days.

“I hope residents can monitor these devices. If there is still flooding, inform me immediately,” he said.
