Selangor Journal: Baling floods: Selangor ready to share management, home reconstruction experiences

BALING, July 21 — The state government is ready to share its experiences with the Kedah state government in redeveloping 17 houses destroyed by floods in Baling in early July, said state executive councillor for housing Rodziah Ismail.

She said a meeting with the relevant district officers will be held, in the event the need to rebuild homes arise in the near future.

Rodziah said the state government is experienced in the management and rebuilding of over 18,000 homes affected by the floods in Selangor at the end of last year.

“At present, no applications have been made. If there is need, InsyaAllah we will figure out how help can be provided.

“The Selangor government formerly helped to rebuild 45 homes in Kelantan during the flooding disaster in 2014,” she said during the handover ceremony for the aid to 163 flood-affected residents at Surau An-Nur Taman Mesra Kupang earlier today.

The Misi Selangor Penyayang (MSP) 2.0 relief mission’s donations, which include RM100 in cash, mattresses, blankets and children’s necessities, was also presented by the state executive councillor for rural development Borhan Aman Shah.

MSP 2.0 saw 150 members of the Special Action Squad (Pantas) from Selangor’s 12 local authorities participate, alongside members of Selangor Volunteers and Team Selangor.

On July 6, MSP 1.0 saw 262 local authority members and volunteers head to Baling to aid in cleaning up dozens of flood victims’ homes, with some 90 tonnes of bulk rubbish removed from the area.

Continuous heavy rain for almost three hours in Baling on July 4 resulted in Sungai Kupang’s water level overflowing into the homes of nearby residents.

Three members of a family, including a pregnant woman, perished after being swept away by the currents.
