MoU between the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre and Google Cloud Malaysia
This morning, the wheels of artificial intelligence begin turning quicker in Selangor as I witnessed the MoU between the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre and Google Cloud Malaysia geared towards transitioning our system of government fit for demands in the 21st century.
11 state government agencies and departments including the State Treasury, State Legislative Assembly, Economic Planning Unit, Works Department, and Air Selangor will work closely with Google Cloud to undergo training through a problem-solving approach to come up with at least one Most Viable Product.
Building on the success of a similar programme Google deployed with the Government of Singapore, Teraju AI Selangor aims to make the State Government of Selangor more responsive, efficient, accessible, accountable, and increase data-driven decision making and policy formulation.
I also do not want Selangorians to solely be consumers of technology. Instead of being perennial scrollers and swipers, I would like to see efforts like today spark interest among the Selangor civil service so that we can transition from being mere consumers to creators and innovators of technology in the AI space.
I believe the best way to approach the world of AI is to understand and use it to complement workers to achieve significant productivity gains.
This means not focusing only on automation by using machines to replace workers, but providing knowledge to workers to use machines to problem-solve and takeover repetitive tasks.
Ultimately, we must create higher-quality jobs.
I must also stress that through this partnership, we will prioritise safe and ethical use of data with zero compromise on the privacy and security of data as we cannot take the threat of cybersecurity lightly.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the team at Google Cloud Malaysia and STDC who have done important work to make this MoU begin on the right track.
I’m glad to see the fruition of this partnership and hope that through this, Selangor can build a more responsive system of government fit for the 21st century and rival some of Asia’s best.
