Malaysia-Russia Relations: Working Visit Led by PM Anwar Ibrahim in Vladivostok

Alhamdulillah, the Malaysian delegation, led by YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has arrived in Vladivostok, Russia, for a two-day working visit to the Russian Federation in conjunction with the Eastern Economic Forum. This significant visit aims to explore new opportunities for economic collaboration, enhance bilateral ties, and strengthen Malaysia’s position on the global stage.

Upon arrival, the Prime Minister chaired a Special ‘Pre-Council’ Meeting to discuss the key agendas of this working visit. I had the opportunity to attend the briefing, where I reviewed the program itinerary and provided input on Selangor’s strategic interests, particularly in technology, trade, and infrastructure development, which align closely with Russia’s capabilities.

Throughout the one and a half days, our schedule is packed with high-level meetings and discussions with various Russian stakeholders and industries. Notably, a special meeting between the Prime Minister and the President of the Russian Federation, His Excellency Vladimir Putin, is also on the agenda. This meeting is expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation in areas such as energy, technology exchange, and trade, which could bring immense benefits to both Malaysia and Selangor.

“Selangor’s participation in this visit is crucial as it opens doors for us to explore potential collaborations in sectors that are key to our state’s growth, including technology, logistics, and education,” I shared during the briefing. This visit is not just about diplomatic relations but also about positioning Selangor as a key player in Malaysia’s economic narrative, particularly in fostering international partnerships that drive innovation and investment.

YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that this visit marks a new chapter in Malaysia-Russia relations, moving beyond traditional ties and focusing on pragmatic, future-forward collaborations. “Our meeting with President Putin will hopefully solidify new agreements that can benefit both our nations, particularly in terms of trade and technology,” he noted.
